What is Enlightenment?

There is a lot of talk about Enlightenment in the yoga & meditation milieu. If you haven’t experience enlightenment or a ‘spiritual awakening’, you may think of it as some disembodied state, or something too mythical, an unavailable state for us mere householders.

While popular discourse makes it seem like enlightened individuals have something others don’t (like some magic download from the cosmos), it’s actually the opposite. Enlightenment comes from a shedding, an unveiling and a losing of our Shadow and patterning, and a great changing of these patterns as we start to see ourselves more and more clearly in-the-light.⠀
⠀
Unwinding Karma, Shadow and en-Lightening ourselves, this is the work we’re doing and teaching in Shakti School. We have two options for online learning that I’ve poured my heart into because I want to make these technologies available to YOU:

✨) Lineage of Love, a super affordable yoga and Ayurveda subscription platform where you get to study with me every month and join at any time for the cost of 1 yoga class per month, and

✨) Ayurveda School! our groundbreaking year-long online 300hr Ayurveda health coaching certification program, the next school year starts in January 2019.⠀
⠀
The true path is one of learning and awareness. We can all do and be this.

Who Am I?

Two big questions that most human beings will ponder at some point in their lives: “Who am I?” and “How can I get more of what I want in my life?”

One of the things I love about the Tantric yoga tradition is its systematic approach to answering both of these inquiries. The Taittiriya Upanishad, one of the most important yogic scriptures, says that if we really want to know who we are, and get more joy and fulfillment in life, we have to get to know our subtle anatomy.

Why? Because we are, according to Tantric anatomy, not one, but a composite of five bodies (pancha koshas): the physical body, the energetic body, the mental/emotional body, the inner-teacher or wisdom body, and the bliss body. When we can bring awareness into the deep layers of each of these bodies, we gain access to our highest, most evolved, powerful Self. This concept shares a lot with what modern day neuroscience and somatic psychology understand about pain and perception.

The teachings go on to explain that what is hidden in these bodies is both our unconscious negative patterning, as well as our greatest gifts and powers. When the patterns that are hidden in the bodies emerge, we are no longer under the pull of the unconscious stuff. We can now get more of what we truly want as we bring the limitations and the latent capacities of the unconscious to the surface. In the end, when we penetrate the last layer of who we are, we are left with an endless power to create, act, and know.

Start to peel back the shadows, join us at our next event: learn more.

Ayurveda Can Change Your Life – Ten Things You May Not Know About Yoga’s Sister

The yoga world has a lesser-known sister and her name is Ayurveda. For thousands of years, yoga and Ayurveda were seen as necessary compliments to one another. But somewhere along the way, we fell in love with yoga and yet forgot about Ayurveda.

And although some famous mamas like Madonna, Christy Turlington, and the Grand Priestess of Get-Your-Act-Together (Oprah) have touted its health-boosting benefits, Ayurveda remains largely an exotic Indian mystery.

I heard about Ayurveda in India. I was studying with a sweet old Brahmin man named A.G. Mohan. I remember thinking, wow, this is amazing and its never gonna’ be applicable to my life back in the U.S. But the more I studied it, the more I realized that it was all about developing deep self-awareness. It was also about humbling the ego (that tells you that you really deserve an entire bar of dark chocolate) to the laws of Nature.

I feel like its time for yoga’s powerhouse sister to come out of hiding and begin infusing our practices and lives with rich, time-tested wisdom.  I wanna’ help her, so here is my mini-Ayurveda primer, just for you.

Ayurveda – which means “Science of Life,” holds the following premises as true:

1.  If Ayurveda were a religion (it’s not), Nature is God and the only sin is not listening to your higher-knowing.

2.  Nature has cycles – daily and seasonal. When we learn them, we can ride them and glean some of their power. When we ignore them, we suffer. When we tune to natural rhythms, our body becomes more balanced naturally. (e.g. being in bed asleep by 10 p.m. instead of surfing Amazon is one example of tuning to natural rhythm).

3.  The body is a wise, Spirit-infused, breathing-animal, mind-matrix charged with an electro-intelligence called prana (energy).  When prana is flowing where it should, you GLOW. Plain and simple.

4.  You are a unique, special snowflake, just like everybody else. Because each individual is unique, you will have different needs. This holds true whether we are talking about what you eat, how many times a month you have sex, or how often and what you do for exercise.

5.  Disease can be caused by a number of things – but at its core, disease is caused by forgetting who we are  – A Timeless Spirit Being.

6.  There is one answer to any question in Ayurveda: It depends.

7.  Energy follows focus. Our experience of life, how we see the world “out there,” and whether we are happy or not, is largely determined by our energy. When we change our energy, our thoughts change. When we change our thoughts, energy shifts in that direction.

8.  Oil your machine – don’t wait for your body to start creaking and cracking before you oil it! Like any fine-tuned instrument, the body needs to be oiled. So go slap some coconut oil on your fine thighs. Now.

9.  Many people are fatigued and depressed/anxious because they aren’t living the life they want to live.

10.  You can’t stop constipation by eating more raw cauliflower. Okay, this one is a stretch, but raw food, if you are already constipated, ain’t gonna help. Ayurveda understands that anything can turn to poison in the body if your metabolism can’t digest it. Yes, even raw organic goji-berry-acai-kale smoothies. Lay off the cold beverages, cold sandwiches, carrots, raw nuts and raw veggies if you suffer from anxiety, insomnia or constipation. Drink some warm ginger tea, eat some soup and rub your body in oil.

I hope this list will get you started on at least becoming curious about what this philosophy and science has to offer your life.

Share it! Live it!

~Katie

Many of you know my house pretty much was totaled Many of you know my house pretty much was totaled in a fire. Lost most everything I owned in the span of a few hours.

I was amazed at my resiliency. Still am.

But I wanna’ be honest with you about my “aftermath.”

As the insurance “battles” mounted and the home rebuild “project” ensued, I have found myself asking myself to become even more disciplined than ever.

But that level of ask is hard on a woman’s body. We aren’t meant to always be “on.” We are not meant for war.

Women are not small men.

Over and over again over the past few months, I have had to remind myself that my biology is cyclical, rhythmic, relational and sensitive to stress. I need nourishment, sunlight, sleep, safety, touch, meaning, laughter and connection.

I’ve had to remind myself that I am not like my boyfriend, whose man-hormones largely operate on a 24-hour cycle. My body moves through an intricate symphony over the course of a month.
Ayurveda has understood this for thousands of years.

In Ayurveda, healing is not domination over the body. Healing comes from creating a loving relationship with the body.

The feminine system thrives with:

🌞 warmth
🌞 mineral-rich nourishment
🌞 adequate rest
🌞 cyclical living
🌞 pleasure without guilt
🌞 movement that energizes instead of depletes
🌞 deep breathing states
🌞 community
🌞 rhythm
🌞 enoughness

This does not mean women are weak.

It means women are powerful in a different way. And men need these things too.

As I do less and feel more, the results are pretty fast: sleep deepens, cravings calm, I have more energy to workout, my skin tone improves, my belly flattens and my desire to love-romp returns.

Here’s a reminder to myself and you in what can be challenging times: stop believing your worth is measured by how much exhaustion you can tolerate.

At The Shakti School, this is one of the deepest conversations we have with women.

We dive into all of this and more in our free course, Women’s Wisdom and Ayurveda. And it’s yours to dive into starting right now.

June marks the rise of pitta season in the Norther June marks the rise of pitta season in the Northern Hemisphere. 🔥🍉 That means more heat in the environment, which can translate to more heat in the body. Too much pitta might show up as irritability, skin flare-ups, acid reflux, loose stools or feeling like your fuse is running short.

It’s time to focus on supporting the liver and blood (sites where pitta typically accumulates) and cooling qualities to prevent excess heat from building up.

P.S. - For my Southern Hemisphere ladies… you’re moving deeper into the cool, dry vata season right now, so for you, it’s time to focus on balancing vata. 🌬️🌀

Some of the best foods for this month:

🍉 Watermelon is sweet, cooling and hydrating for our tissues.

🌺 Hibiscus tea is tart and brings coolness to the blood - perfect for pitta.

🫛 Sweet peas are nourishing and mildly sweet, without bringing too much heaviness.

🍋 Homemade lemon or limeade (especially when made with a little mineral salt and raw honey) replenishes essential minerals.

🌿 Aloe vera delivers the bitter taste directly to the liver and is traditionally used to cool excess pitta.

🥬 Bitter greens are especially supportive for healthy liver function.

🫖 CCF tea is an Ayurvedic staple that supports digestion without aggravating pitta.

🍌 Bananas help replenish fluids and calm irritated tissues.

🌱 Cilantro is one of Ayurveda’s favorite cooling herbs for excess pitta and heat in the blood. Top your meals with it!

🍍 Pineapple is super hydrating, and provides digestive support when eaten in moderation.

🌿 Mint cools the digestive tract and also helps cool the mind.

🥒 Cucumber is super hydrating - and they’re immediately cooling for pitta constitutions. Add to your water or salads!

🥥 Coconut water replenishes electrolytes and offers essential potassium.

🥬 Cabbage is great for digestion - cooling and slightly bitter.

🌾 Fennel is one of Ayurveda’s classic remedies for soothing heat in the digestive system.

Mama nature usually gives us clear indications of Mama nature usually gives us clear indications of her changes if we open our eyes to her subtlety. The more we can align with these rhythms, the easier it is to maintain body/mind health. Just as seasonal shifts transform the weather where we live, they also shake up the internal landscape within our bodies.

In the Northern Hemisphere, it’s time to start gently incorporating pitta-balancing elements into our food and lifestyle.

Depending on where you live, it’s generally a good time to lean into pitta-balancing practices when you start to notice:

☀️ Warmer temperatures

☀️ Longer daylight hours

☀️ A shift from the lush, wet heaviness of spring to a drier, sharper heat

☀️ Increased internal heat (like irritability, skin flare-ups or digestive intensity)

Most simply put, once you start feeling more heat and dryness in your body than you do watery heaviness, it’s a green light to start introducing some pitta-balancing practices into your routine.
