Subtly Sweet Harvest Muffins

~sweeter foods are a reminder of the sweetness of life~
Summer Blog copy

Craving more sweets this fall? A vata-pacifying diet actually calls for more sweet (madhura) taste. Beyond being comforting, soul-hugging and grounding, the sweet taste pacifies vata, invigorates the mind, strengthens the immune system, nourishes body tissues and enhances the ojas. Satisfy your sweet taste with these yummy fall muffins crafted from whole grains, a good dose of vata-pacifying spices and some orchard-fresh apples!

Gluten-free Buckwheat Muffins with Apples & Walnuts

Dry ingredients: ½ cup crushed walnuts; 1 cup almond flour; ½ cup buckwheat flour; ⅓ cup ground flax seed; 1 tsp each powdered ginger, cinnamon & salt;  ¼ tsp each nutmeg, cardamom & allspice; ½ tsp each of baking powder & baking soda

Wet ingredients: ½ cup coconut oil, ½ cup maple syrup, 3 eggs, ⅓ cup non-dairy yogurt, ¼ cup nut milk, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 2 finely diced apples (medium-sized)

Instructions: Combine all dry ingredients in a large bowl. In another bowl, mix wet ingredients, including apples. Add wet to dry and mix well. Spoon mixture into greased muffin tin and bake at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Pair a freshly baked muffin with a nourishing cup of Golden Yogini Milk or another Shakti-infused recipe.

PITTA-SOOTHING ROSEWATER MOCKTAIL 🌹💦🥒 Thi PITTA-SOOTHING ROSEWATER MOCKTAIL 🌹💦🥒 This goddess-worthy mocktail is perfect for when you want to sip something that cools your pitta but still satisfies your senses.

These key ingredients help soothe inner heat:

🥀 Rosewater is mildly astringent which gives it a cooling property both topically and internally. It’s great for balancing excess heat in the digestive system, helping to aid digestive discomfort, bloating and heartburn. Plus there’s nothing more nourishing to the heart center than rose!

🍋 If you’re not-so-new to Ayurveda you’ll know that warm lemon water is a key part of a traditional Ayurvedic morning routine. This is because lemon has a powerful agni boosting effect. Lemon gives our stomach the signal to start creating digestive juices and tells our liver to produce bile, both of which can help ease indigestion.

🍁 Maple syrup encompasses the “sweet” quality in Ayurveda (plus, it’s derived from SAP - ojas, anyone?). The sweet taste soothes pitta and vata but can be a little aggravating to kapha, so consider substituting raw honey if you’re dealing with a kapha imbalance.

Ingredients (makes one serving - double or triple the recipe to share with friends):

• 2T rosewater
• Juice from 1/2 lemon
• 1T good quality maple syrup
• 1 cup plain seltzer (or lightly chilled hibiscus infusion)
• Optional garnish: cucumber, mint, orange, strawberries, etc.!

Directions:

1. Make the rose water. Add 1 teaspoon rose powder to a jar or glass measuring cup. Pour 1 cup boiling water over it. Allow to sit for 30 minutes then strain with a fine mesh strainer. Alternatively, purchase food-grade rosewater.

2. Once cooled, add 2 tbsp of rosewater to your glass.

3. Add juice from 1/2 lemon.

4. Add 1 tbsp good quality maple syrup. Stir ingredients to combine.

5. Top with 1 cup plain seltzer (or alternatively a chilled hibiscus infusion if you want to avoid seltzer!)

Garnish with a few cucumber slices, mint leaves or orange slices! 🍓

Pitta is the second dosha, or “that which digest Pitta is the second dosha, or “that which digests things.” Pitta has the qualities of sharpness, oiliness, lightness and instability. In the physical body, pitta is behind our digestion and metabolism. It's the force of heat in the body that keeps us at a sultry 98.6°F.

When Pitta is in balance, we feel focused, courageous and driven. When there's too much of it, we can feel inflamed, impatient, perfectionistic or simply too hot, physically and emotionally.

But here’s the good news. Ayurveda teaches us that the opposite is the medicine.

During the heat of summer, think cool, sweet, soft and slow. Choose foods, rituals and experiences that help your body exhale, regulate your nervous system and invite more ease into your day.
