Goddess story

Vitality Like A Goddess

The first days of January are associated with the Nativity of Inanna, Pagan Goddess of Sumer (later she appears as Ishtar in Babylon & Asherah in the Levant)

Inanna is a goddess of love, beauty, fertility and war. Graced with a stream of lovers, including the ill-fated Dumuzi, she is cognate to Venus. The celebration of her nativity is done with good food, good sex, and warmth.

This celebration aligns with the Ayurvedic concept of OJAS, one of the three subtle forces in our body. Think of OJAS as the container that holds your abundant energy. It is the ultimate energy reserve of the body and mind. It is the purest essence of Kapha, and physically, it is related to reproductive, hormonal, and cerebrospinal fluids.

Today, in solitary ritual, pay attention to Inanna’s role as mediator of the changing themes of a woman's life, and how we might revitalize and nourish our OJAS, which can be easily depleted this time of year by running around instead of taking it easy and practicing pratyahara, as nature does.

Cultivate OJAS with a short meditation:

Close your eyes.

Take a few deep breaths. Relax for a minute, allowing your breath to deepen and smooth out.

Now slowly start to draw your attention away from your thoughts, emotions or aches, and drop it down into your belly, holding it there until you feel sensation. Then, slowly, bring your awareness into your heart.

Remember a moment in your life when you felt very deep love. Maybe it was a time when you let yourself be totally vulnerable. When you add love to your point of focus, it builds your OJAS.

Bring that moment fully to mind and notice where you feel the sensation of love in your body. Allow this sensation to move, to expand and permeate every cell of your being. When you grow the feeling of love inside your body, you boost the power that enables you to remain strong and wise in the face of heartache, disease and change.

Relax into this loving container, watching how, over and over again, you will gain and lose the feeling, and how you can refocus and experience your inherent enduring, sustaining power.

Fierce Mother Goddess of Love

Thank you sweet Sianna, for your contribution to The Shakti School and Healthy Happy Sexy - Here is Sianna Sherman's take on the mythic story of Durga - Fierce Mother Goddess of Love

The Story of Durga

Once upon a time long ago, and not so long ago, because its happening right now, there was an evil demon named Mahisha, who often took the form of a bull. Day and night, for years and years, he did his acetic yogic practices with a strong ekagrata - one pointed focus, with the hopes that one day Lord Shiva would appear and grant him his wishes. After many years, finally Lord Shiva took notice and came to Mahisha.

“Okay,” Shiva said, “Your practices have been very steady - now what is it that you want?”

“Well,” said Mahisha, “I want to be invincible to all beings.”

“Fine, you shall have your wish,” Shiva replied, “but there has to be one caveat. You have to make yourself vulnerable to at least one class of beings.”

“Well, that's easy,” said Mahisha. “Let me vulnerable to the class of beings called woman.” A woman would never be able to touch me.

This was the first mistake Mahisha made.

Now, with his new super-powers, Mahisha goes about becoming this great lord of the Universe, and he begins to plunder and terrorize everything and everyone. Soon the world falls into total darkness and destruction.

Amidst the chaos and misery, the gods and goddesses decide to get together to see if they can come up with a plan for dealing with this demon who is taking over the world and wreaking havoc.

The gods decide to gather together the three most powerful gods of all -Brahma, Vishnua and Shiva. These three gods come together to create the Triadic heart, and then all the gods and goddesses stand around them in a great community circle. The three most powerful gods begin to focus very intensely, creating a beam of light out of their 3rd-eye, blasting this laser beam of light right out into the center of the circle where they converge. From this ignited center comes an opening and from the opening appears a form. The form is the most lustrous, shining, brilliant thing the world has ever seen. It is the Goddess Durga riding fiercely, mounted upon her great Lion.

With a start, she rides off the base of the great mountain, her four priestesses attendants by her side. Everyone is shocked, expecting her to rush to fight off the evil Mahisha.

“I’m going to my cave now,” she says. “For now I must do my own practices first. Let no one disturb me.”

Once in her cave, she begins her practice by chanting the name of her beloved Shiva, over and over again. “Nama Shivaya, Nama Shivaya, Nama Shivaya.”

Her practice is completely motivated from the feeling of love itself, and she chants to Shiva out of deep and pure love. As she is chanting, the mountains begin to blaze and and goodness and wholeness is again restored to the Universe.

But as the mountain begins to blaze, Mahisha begins to take notice.

“Who is this who dares to make the world a shining, glimmering place? I have plunged the world into darkness and I want it to stay that way!

And with that, Mahisha, in a rage, begins to shape shift. First he becomes a beggar, because he knows whoever has set the mountain ablaze must be very powerful. As he approaches Durga, he looks at her and says, “Oh, I am just a poor beggar asking for some alms, Great Goddess.”

But it is too late for him, because the very moment he sees her, he falls desperate to possess her as his own.

“Great Goddess, I will give you everything. I am the lord of the Universe, you have to be mine.”

Durga smiles knowingly and replies, “No,  I am only for the one for who is pure of Heart.  My practice, Mahisha, comes from a place of Love. Your practices come from a love for power. I want nothing to do with you!”

So she casts him away, leaving him utterly infuriated. Mahisha runs off in a rage, casting the world deeper into darkness.

The gods and goddesses come to Durga and say, “What is happening? Why do you play with this demon and let him run amuck when you are so powerful and you could easily just slay him in a fraction of a second?”

To which Durga replies, “Do not worry, for surely this great Demon Mahisha rushes against his dharma even faster than a moth rushing towards a flame. He himself will be the cause of his own demise.”

It is at this point that the great battle emerges. Mahisha arrives at Durga’s doorstep and takes the form of the Demon Bull - which represents our most stubborn, habitual patterns. The patterns that do not serve us.

But Durga can meet him in whatever way he shape-shifts. He shape-shifts into a lion, and a blue striped tiger, and a great elephant, and she just keeps meeting him and meeting him and meeting him. And then, he takes the shape of a man but he’s still a bull. And right at that juncture where he is half a man and half a bull - she slays him and she puts the soft underside of her foot on the side of his head and subdues the demon and the world is restored to total order.

Kapha on a life-giving, life-affirming level is st Kapha on a life-giving, life-affirming level is stability. It’s endurance and resiliency, the structure that makes us feel safe and held. But this time of year, that same energy can start to feel heavy, slow and a little stuck, which is why we want to gently bring in light, movement and awareness.

Here are three unconventional ways that you can work with kapha-balancing this season that I personally love. 👇🏼

☀️ Get that morning sunlight or try red light therapy. I have found red light therapy to be one of the best pieces of technology for helping to wake up your system, support mood, and regulate hormonal rhythms (all important for kapha this time of year).

🌊 Instead of pushing through or staying busy, take a moment to slow down and feel what’s actually there. Underneath the rushing activity of our lives, there is often grief, and letting yourself feel it can open the heart to create real healing. In Ayurveda, this can help us begin to clear the channels of the body (and subtle body) - by bringing the light of our attention into the heaviness, into what’s been unseen.

🥬 Finally, this is the time of year to lean into fresh, light, and yes, raw seasonal foods. Dark leafy greens, herbs and raw veggies help move stagnation and sluggishness. Just add some oil, spices, salt and vinegar to reduce the vata. I sometimes add cinnamon! Yep!

The Level 2 course begins in 3 weeks and we are ge The Level 2 course begins in 3 weeks and we are gearing up to make it more amazing than ever before. We're adding new classes, teachers and finessing the curriculum to support the most transformative, deep-learning experience possible.

But don't take our word for it, here's what some of our past Level 2 graduates are saying:

🦋 "I am SO SO SO glad I said YES to Level 1. And even GLADER that I said YES to Level 2. This is more than a school. As someone who has her Masters degree & (loads) of 'qualifications', this is without doubt, the best 'school' I have ever studied under because it is taught with, from & for LOVE."

🦋 "Level one blew my heart and mind open to make a shift in my business and LIFE from the unbalanced masculine to the balanced masculine & feminine. I leaned so far into this transformative energy that I went on to learn how to facilitate womb circles, and led my first one this past Sunday! It was a magical experience- singing, sharing and surrendering with a group of amazing women. I am excited to merge our lineage of Ayurveda with my lineage of womb teachings to create a uniquely magical way to serve the womxn in my community. So grateful for all the teachings, support and inspiration I received here..."

🎓 Level 2 grads: what was the most impactful part of Level 2 for you? Share below to light up our incoming Level 2 class. 👇🏼✨
Have you ever had those days where you wake up fee Have you ever had those days where you wake up feeling amazing? There is a lightness in your step, your hair seems to look especially good and your skin is glowing? ✨

And, then the very next day you have the opposite experience? You wake up feeling sluggish, a little puffy, and your hair is oddly oily or too dry and things seem to upset you easily?

Most likely the glorious day you had before also started off with the perfect poop. Yeah, that’s right, I said it. Poop. 💩

Of course there can always be many other contributing factors at play here, but oftentimes it is our digestion that determines how we feel, how we look and how we see our inner and outside world.

In Ayurveda, digestion is all about agni. When your digestion is strong your agni is strong. And, when agni is strong, you can easily tap into that glorious flow state.

A flow state is when you are in the zone. It’s when your mental clarity is at its peak, you feel vibrant, full of life and your shakti is lit up. When your digestive system is weakened it becomes much more difficult to follow through with daily tasks and your energy is usually pretty tanked. In Ayurveda, this is associated with an excess of ama. Ama is anything toxic that accumulates in the body. You can think of it as the sludge that slows down digestion. It is only when we are free from ama that we are able to digest our food properly and therefore we can more easily digest our life.

Sometimes our inner guidance asks us to step into Sometimes our inner guidance asks us to step into what feels scary or uncertain. Listening to our intuition can be challenging, and demand that we take action requiring courage and faith.

Yet leaning in and trusting that inner whisper is how we grow more aligned with who we’re meant to be.

When we listen to our inner guide, even when it’s soft or subtle, we always end up with what is truly meant for us. (Even when you’d rather ask the Universe for a *different* answer instead. 😉)

This is your nudge to listen to the inner signals you’ve been sensing lately. 🪄💫
