You Are So Much More Than You Know

Two big questions that most human beings will ponder at some point in their lives: “Who am I?” and “How can I get more of what I want in my life?”

Some of us may even ask ask them on a daily basis.

One of the things I love about the Tantric yoga tradition is its systematic approach to answering both of these inquiries. The Taittiriya Upanishad, one of the most important yogic scriptures, says that if we really want to know who we are, and get more joy and fulfillment in life, we gotta get to know our subtle anatomy.

Why? Because we are, according to Tantric anatomy, not one, but a composite of five bodies (pancha koshas): the physical body, the energetic body, the mental/emotional body, the inner-teacher or wisdom body, and the bliss body. When we can bring awareness into the deep layers of each of these bodies, we gain access to our highest, most evolved, powerful Self.

Body Mapping

Each of these bodies comes with their own limitations, access points, and super-powers. The more we know about each one of them, and the more familiar we get in their unique flavors, the more we have a relationship to them. And when we can relate them as as layers of who we are, the more they begin to show us their hidden contents.

The teachings go on to explain that what is hidden in these bodies is both our unconscious negative patterning, as well as our greatest gifts and powers. When the patterns that are hidden in the bodies emerge, we are no longer under the pull of the unconscious stuff. We can now get more of what we truly want as we bring the limitations and the latent capacities of the unconscious to the surface. In the end, when we penetrate the last layer of who we are, we are left with an endless power to create, act, and know.

Access Points

The physical. Many activities invite us into the physical body. Asana, for example, is an excellent way to tune in. We can feel our bones and they way they stack on top of each when we come into a Plank Pose. What happens to the tops of your thighs when you do Warrior 1 for long enough? Perhaps a burning sensation or a “shaking with joy.” Dancing will also bring you into the physical. So will a big meal, strong pain, sex, or a sunburn.

The energetic. Commonly referred to as the prana body, this can be felt when we keep the physical body still. We experience prana, according to the teachings, as subtle moving sensations like vibration and pulse, or we see it when we close our eyes as color or light. We can also experience prana as the impulse that pulls breath into the body (without us trying at all), and the force that causes air to leave again. This is one of the reasons the yogis encouraged such a strong connection to the breath. Prana also rides along the many intelligent processes in the body: the heart beat, the circulation of blood, and the capacity of our sensory organs.

The mental/emotional. This is where many of us spend a lot of time. It’s the part of us that thinks, plans, decides, emotes, and reacts. Its also the part of us that over-thinks, obsessively plans, sits in indecision, represses emotion instead of channeling it, and overreacts. Meditation is a wonderful way to access this body in a balanced and helpful way. Simply sitting and watching your thoughts, opinions, and judgements with a sense of detachment can give you more access to witnessing (and being less identified by the pulls of) this body.

The inner teacher.  This is also often called the Wisdom Body. We can think of it as the highest aspect of our intuition and conscience. It’s the part of you that urges you out of bed to meditate or go for a run when you’d much rather lounge in the sheets checking Facebook. It’s the part of us that always knows the right path to take. Just like we would lift weights to make the physical body strong, we strengthen this body by sitting in silence, and sharpening our ability to hear the voice of our soul. When this body is strong, our daily actions become giant steps forward in the direction of our highest life purpose, our calling, our big destiny. We move from a place of knowingness instead of reaction.

The bliss. It’s pretty amazing that the subtlest aspect of who we are, at the core of all the other bodies, is referred to as an ocean of unending waves of bliss. Ironically, we access this body by actually dis-identifying with everything. To practice being in your bliss body, you can try the Tantric practice of neti neti, a word meaning “not this, not that.” In a meditative seat, notice what arises in your field of awareness. A thought about your job pops up and you say/acknowledge, “I’m not that.” You feel your low back ache a little, same thing: “I’m not that.” You feel your desire for more intimate love, “I’m not that.” A hunger pang arises, “I’m not this.” You sense light in front of your forehead, “I’m not that.” You may even feel, for a split second, the bliss. And in that moment, remember,  “I’m not even that.” The more you keep surrendering into non-identification, the more, the teachings promise, the bliss can flow.

Why Other People’s Baby, Engagement Ring, Kick-Ass Job, and Even Deepak Chopra Have Nothing to Do With You

The other day I posted a heart-felt sentiment on Facebook. I think, in the history of my Face-Life, I have never gotten so many “likes.” My friend and student, Martine, encouraged me to write it up as a longer blog post.

The comment:

I think it spoke to what many of us feel whilst scanning the Facebook “I’m super happy, tan, at-the-beach, cuddling-with-my-puppy/baby/ferret, engaged, pregnant, skinny, surrounded-by-beautiful-women, look-at-my-food-porn” created reality of our “friends.”

And trust me – I’m not immune to this reality manipulation as well. Id MUCH rather show all my friends/fans/students/family the “somtimes-moments” of me dancing Natarajasana on a mountain in my spandex-encased, J-lo-esque bootie than the other “sometimes-moments” of my life where I have eaten too much, am laying on the floor, bloated and crying, my mother praying over me for Jesus to help her poor food-compulsed daughter to lay off the chocolate chip cookies and gouda.

Don’t act shocked by what I just wrote. You know you have a dark side-compulsive thing you do (drink wine out of a water bottle at your kids playground? watch porn instead of being truly intimate with your wife? go to Cross-fit like a maniac? stay at the office to avoid your media-juiced kids?). But you aren’t posting that shit to the web. Of course not.

But I digress. So, let’s go back to the back story that inspired me to really NEVER believe the hype that says that someone else’s happiness reduces my own.

I learned that amazing truth from a teacher years back. This great teacher told us a story about how long, long ago, he felt jealous of someone who is now a very famous author and spiritual teacher (ok, lets just say it was Deepak Chopra). Every time he heard Deepak’s name it would feel like a thorn in his side. And you may remember that there was a time when Deepak was everywhere (especially everywhere in Los Angeles).

But being a good Tantric practitioner, instead of silently rebuking good ole’ Deepak, my teacher began to ask the question we should all ask when we feel the pangs of jealousy. “What is it about this person that is reflecting some unfulfilled longing in ME?” He realized that he himself wanted to be showing up in the world more, reaching more people, writing books, and fulfilling his own deepest purpose. As soon as he began to realize these things internally and tangibly, the silent Deepak-hating completely went away. Completely. Now, did Deepak change? Nope, not one bit. In fact, Deepak continues to become more famous and successful and tan and kind of wonderfully weird. And good for him.

You see, there is zero relationship between what other people are attaining and what you are NOT attaining. We live a lie whereby we feel we must compete for the good stuff. There is only so much money. So many resources. So much love. So many yoga students. So many opportunities.

But the truth of the matter is (and this is what Tantra teaches), your INTERNAL state dictates your happiness. If you are annoyed by someone’s success (or anything about someone else really), you gotta look it in the face and say, “Hello Guru, what can you teach me?”

I have been committed to the path of “there is no competition” for years. The commitment to using the “pangs” of negative emotion (jealousy, anger, fear, sadness) as teachers has been the toughest and most fruitful journey of my life. But slowly, I can see the way this path begets FREEDOM. I am the creator of my own happiness. And when I see YOUR insanely-edible baby, your amazing new hairstyle, your crazy-bendy yoga body, your food-porn, your hunky, flannel-wearing, lumber-jack-bearded-husband, your amazing way with words, your crazy-gorgeous engagement ring, your new book, you covered in snakes with zero-cellulite in your tight white yoga pants, your sky-diving abilities, your commitment to changing the world, your Cross-fit body, or any other attainment on your horizon, I am overcome with joy. Just joy. Anything else is just fuel for my own burning.

Pass it on.

Comment AYURVEDASCHOOL to join us in 2026. See you inside. 🪄🧬🌿
So, here is my heart. I used to think I needed to So, here is my heart. I used to think I needed to have a lot of talent or perfect ability to launch great things and go for my dreams. Now, as I have aged and wised up a little (I hope), I see that it’s not so much about ability, it’s about availability.

I wasn’t born with a naturally great immune system. I built it with Ayurveda, herbs and supplements.

I wasn’t born with a banging body. I built it. With yoga, weight training and dance.

I wasn’t born happy or emotionally resilient. I earned these things. Through meditation, spiritual surrender and a ton of great therapy.

I wasn’t born with a regulated nervous system. I re-created it through regulating my heart towards God, and then others.

My list could go on and on.
You see, I did not start off with innate skills. Heck, I still feel like Kung-fu Panda at the gym and in my relationships.

But I have based my entire life and my career and this school on the sacred religion of SURRENDER AND SINCERITY. I am open and ready to be the best me I can be. I am also passionate about YOU becoming the best you in 2026. And that, together, we could go out into the world and help raise the spirits of others like us.

Are you sincerely ready to become available this year? Available to yourself and others as a servant to the highest things our human hearts can reach for?

If so, I am your Ayurveda gal Friday. My team will support you every step of the way in 2026 like a spiritual Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader. Or just Dolly dressed as one.

Let’s go.
Spots are going quick! Don’t miss this.

With love,
Katie + Team Shakti
My entire life, I’ve been looking for something My entire life, I’ve been looking for something that feels like a real home. Like many of you, I come from a deeply imperfect family lineage, an imperfect religious tradition and a broken culture. Over the 2+ decades of spiritual dedication, I have finally started to FEEL how painful it is to feel like I don’t really belong anywhere.

And guess what? Our INCREDIBLE spirit-based, feminine-form Ayurveda School is also an imperfect home.

Because that’s the rub…

There is no perfect family, lover or spiritual institution that can fully take away that DEEP soul ache of wanting to belong.

In my experience, that can only be an inside job.

And The Shakti School does a GREAT job at providing the space, community, teachers and teachings to give you room for what you are truly longing for. Not another method or identity, but a place to come home to yourself. That listening is what shaped this school and the community that holds it.

We're not perfect.
We're not fully enlightened beings.
We're just regular women like YOU that want a home where we can unravel in a very loving way.

If you're ready for your soul to not shout truth, but really learn how to listen...

If you're ready to not rip off all the veils that are blocking your light, but just soften them enough so that they can just gently fall away in a way that melts you and other people...

I really would love to see your face in our school January 14th.

In a world that is obsessed with stimulation and expansion and attainment, I want to give you a place where you can feel that which has just been forgotten. We are not a place that's going to put anything new in you. We are a place of remembering.

If you're ready to awaken through nourishment, to heal through laughter and community and goodness, if you're ready to transform through love, I know that The Shakti School is the perfect place for you.

We do have limited spots. So if you're feeling the call, I encourage you to join us. We can’t wait to welcome you into our community. ❤️

Unless we connect with the deepest part of ourselv Unless we connect with the deepest part of ourselves…all the New Year’s resolutions will be futile.

All these plans at self-improvement are just another mask we wear.

Eventually, when we fail (because Lord knows we will…), we may feel like we are bad, unloveable…etc. And the cycle starts again.
⠀
So, as we approach the New Year, here is my message to you (and as always, to myself)⠀
⠀
You are already inherently good.⠀

From that place, you can begin a spiritual practice that supports the deeply soulful woman you already are.

Instead of setting resolutions, I like to think about beginning intentional habits that will support any goals I might have for the New Year.

The key is being connected to your higher self, the part of you that intuitively knows what is best for you and your success.

And that requires getting quiet and connecting to your heart. This is what every woman *actually* needs more of.

❤️‍🩹 Heal unresolved wounds that are still weighing on you. Matters of the heart can be difficult to heal. And more often than not it takes a lot of time. If needed, work with a professional in somatic experience who can help you navigate that space.

😌 Manage your stress levels. Stress plays a huge role in emotional well being (which also leads to a lot of physiological effects as well). Become more familiar with the ways you disconnect so that you can best prepare yourself for when it comes up.

🙏🏼 Take time for prayer. Praying doesn’t have to be a religious act. Prayer can be mantra reciting, it can be through repetition of a positive affirmation, or it can look totally different.

📝 Keep a journal. Getting your thoughts on paper will help you to sort through your emotional hang ups or will simply help to process the day. It is in journaling when I gain some of my best inspiration.

🧘🏼‍♀️ Manage your time + make the time to unwind and relax. In our go, go, go society there can often be pressure associated with non-stop doing. Make space for doing nothing. It is in that space where your heart will have the time to heal and make peace.
⠀
Peace and fulfillment comes from finding your center. May we all have the experience of true richness in 2026.
In folk wisdom traditions, this time of year invit In folk wisdom traditions, this time of year invites us to descend, listen and let the darkness work on us.

So, if you are still hoping to drop into your heart and uncover how this past year’s heartbreaks, hurts or life initiations can become portals to your awakening, I invite you to carve out the time to tune into our free class Winter Solstice Initiation: Your Wound is the Way before this year comes to a close.

This class explores how winter invites emotional alchemy and how you can turn your scars into wisdom and stillness into inner authority.

You’ll learn why nothing is wasted, and why the light returns only after we allow ourselves to go into the dark.

It’s not too late to embrace the transformational nature of the season and walk into 2026 seated in your soul.
